John Lidington of HireOwl
HireOwl connects businesses to talented university students who help them with a variety of freelance projects and part-time work, as well as internships. Popular projects include digital marketing, blog writing, social media campaigns, graphic design, promotional videos, website development, online research, and a variety of other tasks that help businesses grow more quickly.
How long has your business been in existence?
HireOwl was founded in early 2014.
What made you decide to start your own business?
My Co-Founder, Colin LeStrange, and I started HireOwl because we’re passionate about education and, more specifically, helping students prepare for their careers. Gone are the days when simply earning a college degree is enough to land a job after graduation. Now students need hands-on work experience too. We help them gain that experience by connecting them with businesses that can truly benefit from their skills.
What is the biggest challenge for a small business owner in your industry?
One of the biggest challenges that we have faced in building our business is the result of a conscious decision to emphasize customer service. We knew from the start that this approach is inherently less scalable, but it’s important to us that we gather user feedback to incorporate into product enhancements and ultimately make sure our customers have a great experience on our site.
What sets you apart from your competition?
We have quite a few points of differentiation that we could include here, but perhaps the one that matters most is the quality of our talent pool. Not only do we work with the top universities in the nation, our students are screened before they can set up a profile on our site and then receive performance reviews and feedback after every job. You’d be hard pressed to find a more attractive balance of quality and affordability.
Who’s your target clientele?
We work with organizations of all sizes, but startups and small-medium businesses have historically been our sweet spot.
Why is your service(s) necessary/important in your industry?
HireOwl addresses major pain points for both sets of our users. For businesses, there is no shortage of things to do around the office every day but there never seem to be enough hours in the day. Working with students from HireOwl enables businesses to get more work done in a given day. Our technology allows talent to be sourced as needs arise, so give us a try whenever you have a deadline looming or are just feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work you have on your plate.
For students, finding a job is often very difficult. We have streamlined this process considerably. Each freelance project a student works on is not only a new work experience but an opportunity to impress an employer and potentially receive a full-time offer.
In which area(s) do professionals in your industry need most legal help?
Early stage startups often need help with:
1. The corporate structure decision and corresponding documentation;
2. Trademark and patent filings; and
3. Various documents like non-disclosure agreements (NDA) and contracts.
What is your advice for others in your industry who are in need of legal help?
When other startup founders and small business owners need legal help, I advise them to seek out a professional, particularly one focused on startups or small businesses. There are times when you shouldn’t cut corners, and legal matters definitely qualify as such.
What are the top 3 qualities which you think are most important in the selection of a lawyer?
The top 3 qualities, that I believe are most important in the selection of a lawyer are relevant experience, honesty, and transparency.

Shahrina Ankhi-Krol is the founder of Ankhi-Krol Law. She started the law firm with the goal of providing accessible and transparent legal representation to small business owners after noticing that small business owners are often uninformed or ill-informed of the law. As a result, they either attempt to solve legal problems on their own or do nothing at all. Both courses of action are dangerous as “un-doing” a legal mistake – either through misfeasance or nonfeasance – costs more money and time than would have been spent if the business owners obtained legal counsel from the start. Ms. Ankhi-Krol not only provides legal representation, but also provides business counseling to her clients in order to identify and address small problems before they become unmanageable.
