Boaz David of Human B
HUMAN B is a consulting and production company offering a one-stop solution for emerging designers and established fashion brands. Human B's Mission is to provide fashion brands - at all levels - with guidance, tools, and services to start and build a successful fashion business. It offers start-up planning, market positioning, sourcing, product development, production, costing, pricing and logistics services.
How long has your business been in existence?
I have been in the fashion industry for over 20 years, but as a company, we have been operating for five years.
What made you decide to start your own business?
I come from a family in which almost everyone had a small business, so it was always clear to me that I will go that route as well.
What is the biggest challenge for a small business owner in your industry?
The fashion industry is a challenging industry to break into. It takes quite some time for a small fashion brand to carve a niche for itself in the market as the market is very crowded and there is a lot of competition. So, a brand needs to have a unique concept/product to stand out and have lots of patience. Therefore, the biggest challenge for small brands is cash flow and the ability to sponsor the business for the first couple of years or until it grows.
What sets you apart from your competition?
We work with many start-ups and young designers while most companies stay away from them. This is because start-ups require a lot of attention and effort in the beginning and it takes time before they yield results. We pride ourselves in the care and attention that we provide to our customers and that is how we are different. We become very invested in our projects and although our main focus is the product, we support our customers with everything they need for their business. By always focusing on the big picture, we are able to provide better service that helps our customers to obtain better results in the most effective and least expensive way. As a result, we are a bit more selective when choosing the brands that we take on. So, once we agree to take them on, we put in 150% and they get the attention and care of a big brand, something that other companies will not offer them until they are indeed a big brand.
Who’s your target clientele?
Fashion designers and fashion brands. Start-up, small, and mid-size fashion brands.
Why is your service(s) necessary/important in your industry?
Our customers either don’t have the knowledge and/or experience to develop and produce their fashion product, or they don’t have the resources to have a full-time production manager on staff. Therefore, by outsourcing these services to us, they not only get the services they need when they need them but also get from a team that has extensive experience. We guide and help them to avoid big mistakes.
In which area(s) do professionals in your industry need most legal help?
Mostly, in the field of intellectual property, such as copyright, trademark, and some contractual services, like Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA). Since it’s a creative field, designers are looking for ways to protect their design/ideas.
What is your advice for others in your industry who are in need of legal help?
Consult with an attorney who specializes in the matters that you need help with. Spend the extra bucks on consulting someone who does this for a living and save yourself the stress and headache.
What are the top 3 qualities which you think are most important in the selection of a lawyer?
The most important things for me would be:
1. If they specialize (or at least has the needed experience) in the matters that I need help with;
2. My communication with them. That is an important thing for me when working with anyone, be it a vendor or a customer. Successful relationship between two parties is the result of how the parties communicate and work with each other;
3. Their fee structure. Some attorneys out there structure their fee in a way that makes you rethink and hesitate every time you approach them, that makes the experience very uncomfortable and not as helpful to get all the answers that you want.

Shahrina Ankhi-Krol is the founder of Ankhi-Krol Law. She started the law firm with the goal of providing accessible and transparent legal representation to small business owners after noticing that small business owners are often uninformed or ill-informed of the law. As a result, they either attempt to solve legal problems on their own or do nothing at all. Both courses of action are dangerous as “un-doing” a legal mistake – either through misfeasance or nonfeasance – costs more money and time than would have been spent if the business owners obtained legal counsel from the start. Ms. Ankhi-Krol not only provides legal representation, but also provides business counseling to her clients in order to identify and address small problems before they become unmanageable.
