Laurren Darr, Owner of Pet Fashion Guild and Left Paw Press

How long has your business been in existence?

International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals, now known as the Pet Fashion Guild, was founded in 2013. Left Paw Press was founded in 2007.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I always wanted to "make my own way" in the world. In 2004, the timing was right for me to leave my corporate marketing position and finally venture out on my own as a marketing consultant specializing in trade show marketing.

What is the biggest challenge for a small business owner in your industry? How did/do you overcome it? Letting go and delegating tasks have been my biggest challenges. I had a realization that, just because I could do something, did not mean that I should be doing it. I also realized that people that I would outsource to are likely better at those tasks and more likely doing genius work. For example, I have a wonderful book keeper. She happily does the entries and I am happy to pay her to spare me the aggravation of figuring it all out. What sets you apart from your competition?

The Pet Fashion Guid is focused on educational, networking and showcasing needs of those creating fabulous fashions for pets. We create unique products and programs to serve those needs. Left Paw Press is our publishing imprint that publishes books that may not otherwise be published, such as the Pet Business Planning Almanac, pug dog children's books, children's racing books, and medical books.

What service(s) did you use Ankhi-Krol Law for?

For drafting an author agreement for a potential author for Left Paw Press.

Why was that service(s) necessary/important in your industry?

We wanted to make sure that we were protected against liabilities and that we would own the copyright to any work that was produced by an author that we were considering to publish.

Why did you decide to hire an attorney instead of doing it yourself?

I decided to hire an attorney because I knew this was a specialized field that, if it ever required litigation, would need a solid agreement that was not "written on a paper napkin over a couple glasses of wine."

What’s your advice for others in your industry who are in need of legal help?

Hire a professional like Shahrina Ankhi-Krol that specializes in the field you need help. When it comes to certain issues like trademark and copyright, do-it-yourself or "DIY" may not protect you in the way you need.

Your overall professional experience with Ankhi-Krol Law. Would you recommend the firm?

My experience with Shahrina was professional an enjoyable. I would highly recommend her as an attorney. She provides impeccable service in a timely manner. At every step along the process, she was clear about expectations.

Ankhi-Krol Law is a boutique law firm located in the heart of Midtown, New York City. The firm takes pride in working with ALL types of businesses in the areas of:

Business Law; Contract Law; Trademark Law; and Copyright Law

Niche focus in the following industries: Fashion, Creatives, Pet Industry

Shahrina Ankhi-Krol is the founder of Ankhi-Krol Law. She started the law firm with the goal of providing accessible and transparent legal representation to small business owners after noticing that small business owners are often uninformed or ill-informed of the law. As a result, they either attempt to solve legal problems on their own or do nothing at all. Both courses of action are dangerous as “un-doing” a legal mistake – either through misfeasance or non-feasance – costs more money and time than would have been spent if the business owners obtained legal counsel from the start. Ms. Ankhi-Krol not only provides legal representation, but also provides business counseling to her clients in order to identify and address small problems before they become unmanageable.
