New York City Public School System and COVID19 - Interview with Ms. Halloran
Updated: May 13, 2020
In this episode, we hear from Ms. Halloran, a 23 year veteran of the New York City public school system, the largest public school system in the United States. Through her career, Ms. Halloran has taught and inspired countless students, including me.
To date, she continues to teach in Queens, New York, the "epicenter of the epicenter" of COVID19. Ms. Halloran discusses the impact of the coronavius on the school system, the students, and herself. She also points out the silver-lining of remote teaching/learning.
If you can't tell from our interactions in the video, over the years, our relationship has transformed from that of teacher and student to that of friends. I still cannot make myself call her by her first name, but that's another story! She was my English teacher in the seventh grade in Queens, New York, where I grew up.
By the time I was in my second year of law school in Michigan, and lost contact with her, Ms. Halloran attended a writing event in which she was given a notebook with a quote printed on the cover. The quote read, "Creativity is the art of making something extraordinary from the plain and simple." The author's name caught her attention as not many individuals sport the name "Shahrina Ankhi." Turns out, The Random House, Inc. was still using my quote from a writing contest I won in high school.
Thankfully, she Googled my name and e-mailed my externship supervisor with the above photo to get in touch. The rest is history.
