This week's feature: Michael Meyer of Picture More Business
Picture More Business is a commercial photography studio focused on corporate and legal portraiture. It has been in existence for three years. Prior to that, I operated the business under my own name for ten years. The studio collaborates with law firms and other corporate clients on collateral communications, public relations and content marketing projects.
Who’s your target clientele?
Mainly, attorneys and executives. A relationship with an AM Law 100 firm or with a marketing agency can be equally fruitful.
Why did you start your own business?
I have always wanted to be a photographer. I can't remember, even as a young child, wanting to be anything else. The photography industry has always been dominated by the freelance model, and the digital revolution only made it more so. Running my own business was inevitable.
What is the biggest challenge for a small business owner in your industry? How did/do you overcome it?
The biggest challenge for me is finding ways to engage with my target audience and remaining top of mind when their imaging needs arise. My solution to this challenge has been to focus my services and target audience tightly. This has helped me to not only connect with potential clients but also to raise my brand awareness within the industries I serve. I engage with both existing and potential clients through intense networking, regular follow-ups via e-mail and regular mail as well as through online blogging and social media.
What sets you apart from your competition?
One of my clients described working with me this way:
"He understood what we needed immediately and executed beautifully. Fast paperwork, great communication skills, flexible, tech savvy, extremely professional." The first part of that description is the baseline - understanding a client's needs and executing them effectively. The second part of that description is what sets me apart from my competition - I make the process easy for my clients.
What service(s) did you use Ankhi-Krol Law for?
A little less than a year after re-branding my business as Picture More Business, I realized that the name was an unique asset. Ankhi-Krol Law helped me to trademark the name.
Why was that service(s) necessary/important in your industry?
My goal is to build a business that can eventually transcend my participation in it. Protecting the core asset of that business, its identity, is crucial in building and maintaining brand recognition over the long haul.
Why did you decide to hire an attorney instead of doing it yourself?
Some things are worth doing oneself and others are worth having an expert do for you so that it gets done correctly the first time. For me, it was worthwhile to hire Ankhi-Krol Law in the trademark registration process because it gave me the peace of mind that the paperwork would be filled out correctly. Should there have been any hiccups in the process, someone knowledgeable would have handled them to get the registration approved.
What’s your advice for others in your industry who are in need of legal help?
My advice for others in my industry is to speak to an attorney sooner rather than later. Working with an attorney proactively on things like contracts or trademarks is far easier than ignoring them or doing them yourself, poorly, and having to deal with problems later on. Working with an attorney also means that you're building a relationship. Should disagreements arise between you and a future client, the attorney would be well-poised to help solve them before they escalate.

Shahrina Ankhi-Krol founded Ankhi-Krol Law (www.ankhikrollaw.com) with the goal of providing legal representation to small business owners after noticing that small business owners are often uninformed or ill-informed of the law. As a result, they either attempt to solve legal problems on their own or do nothing at all. Both courses of action are dangerous as “un-doing” a legal mistake – either through misfeasance or nonfeasance – costs more money and time than would have been spent if the business owners obtained legal counsel from the start. Ms. Ankhi-Krol not only provides legal representation, but also provides business counseling to her clients in order to identify and address small problems before they become unmanageable.
