Nancy E. Hassel of American Pet Professionals
American Pet Professionals is a business networking organization for the pet industry, bringing pet professionals together nationwide.
How long has your business been in existence?
Established in 2009.
What made you decide to start your own business?
I always knew that I would own my own business, and wanted to be in the pet industry - after a few other pet industry businesses, I realized the lack of resources available for other pet professionals and decided to host a networking event to bring everyone together. Since that very first event in February of 2009, I have hosted nearly 100 in-person events, bringing in experts from within and outside the pet industry to help educate pet professionals, have held fundraising events for many of our non-profit rescue members and have seen new pet businesses form just from pet pros coming to an event. I love to see fellow pet professionals prosper and ultimately help animals and our communities as well.
What is the biggest challenge for a small business owner in your industry?
Running a business is not for the faint of heart, there are many challenges that small business owners will face, but it is how you handle them that makes the difference. I think it really depends on the person for what their biggest challenge could be.
What sets you apart from your competition?
What competition? Cheeky smile :) I put an enormous amount of pressure on myself to figure out what I can do to continuously help members of American Pet Professionals, the pet industry as a whole and to bring new ideas to help everyone succeed and be the best they can be.
Who’s your target clientele?
Anyone who is in the pet industry who is interested in learning, working with other pet professionals, building relationships and bringing their business to the next level - or a level they never thought they would achieve.
Why is your service(s) necessary/important in your industry?
I believe it is vital. You can ask any one of our members, many of which have been members since the inception back in '09 why being part of our organization has helped them and their business or animal rescues in countless ways. I get regular e-mails from members updating me on actions they took after attending an event or how they met just the person they needed to meet to grow. It is after all, not about me, but our pet industry community and see others achieve amazing dreams for their businesses and rescues.
In which area(s) do professionals in your industry need most legal help?
Oh, well you know, I think this could be a 10 question answer!
1. Having a good lawyer for your business is incredibly important from the beginning of your business. Things could arise that you need a lawyer suddenly and then you are scampering to find good legal help;
2. Having a legal help to make sure all of your documents, contracts and any other important paper work is done properly; and
3. Of course, in the pet industry if you have a product, logo or business name you need that trademarked to protect yourself and your business entirely.
What is your advice for others in your industry who are in need of legal help?
Contact a good lawyer.
What are the top 3 qualities which you think are most important in the selection of a lawyer?
Professionalism; expert in the area of law they are practicing - and if they are not familiar, find a good lawyer to help you; and timeliness of getting what you need done.

Shahrina Ankhi-Krol is the founder of Ankhi-Krol Law. She started the law firm with the goal of providing accessible and transparent legal representation to small business owners after noticing that small business owners are often uninformed or ill-informed of the law. As a result, they either attempt to solve legal problems on their own or do nothing at all. Both courses of action are dangerous as “un-doing” a legal mistake – either through misfeasance or nonfeasance – costs more money and time than would have been spent if the business owners obtained legal counsel from the start. Ms. Ankhi-Krol not only provides legal representation, but also provides business counseling to her clients in order to identify and address small problems before they become unmanageable.
